It says that the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, Qusam ibn Abbas, came to Samarkand with a small army to establish Islam. However, a huge white bird descended from the sky, which destroyed the dam. In commemoration of this event, one of the companions of Kuteiba, Muhammad ibn Vasi, built the Hazret-Khizra mosque on the site of the Zoroastrian temple revered by the Sogdians at the southern tip of Afrasiab at the Iron Gate.
