Jiuquan, formerly known as Suzhou, is a prefecture-level "city" in the northwesternmost part of Gansu Province in the People's Republic of China. Dunhuang, a city close to Jiuquan, is famous today for the Mogao Caves, There are 735 caves in Mogao, carved into the cliffs above the Dachuan River. The caves were created between the 4th and the 14th centuries, and are particularly noted for their Buddhist art.
