I mean, the waitstaff was nice but the food was not good at all. The bread for the bruschetta was like soggy toast. The calamari was like rubber (although the waiter made a big deal to tell me it was fresh cut that morning and made absolutely no apologies - even loudly asking other customers...who were clearly family, to back him up that they were tasty. As if maybe it was my teeths fault that they had encountered what seemed to be pure plastic on my plate.) He insisted it was fresh (definitely frozen) but calamari should not look, taste, or feel like that - for £8 we ate approximately 3 "rings" because we just couldn't stomach the rest. The fish as a main dish was cooked properly but the presentation left a lot to be desired, and it was just too dry (no sauce or anything, which it desperately needed) for a salmon dish. It reminded me of something I used to cook for myself during uni - salmon and fried potatoes just dropped on a plate. For the price, I expected more. And I know it's a touristy place so we should have known better...but we were starving and needed to eat at the end of the day -- so I feel the fact that I still felt it was terrible says a lot. Normally when you're that hungry, stuff like I mentioned doesn't stand out...but this place seems to need a wake up call. I feel bad as the staff seems very nice, but I guess it's the manager who doesn't seem to get that maybe not everything is perfect.

Wonderful Italian restaurant close to Grassmarket During our stay at Edinburgh, we went two times to Il Castello. The first time we had classical pasta and pizza dishes which were very good and reasonable priced. The second time we went for a three-course dinner and had seafood starters, grilled fish and seafood pasta as main and typical Italian deserts. All dishes were tasting wonderful. The service is very friendly and came with good recommendations. The kitchen is partly open so that you can watch while your food is prepared. Il Castello is located very close to Grassmarket and Victoria Street, but it is by far less crowded and it seems that most customers come from the neighborhood. If you are looking for some really good food in a relaxed environment and close to Edinburgh Castle, I recommend the Il Castello.
