I live in Syracuse, NY and visit the Canal Museum frequently. They have recently revamped their exhibit areas and there are several interactive exhibits that will help you understand the hydrology of the canal and its significance to the development of the Empire State and, indeed, the rest of the USA in the early 1800's. The first "Interstate Highway" in the USA to my way of thinking. Enjoy!
