A beautiful location even if you're not into Civil War history! I'd wholeheartedly recommend bringing a picnic basket and a blanket when visiting this museum. It's a little hard to find, but it's a really quiet place with great exhibits in the actual museum. The staff is very well informed and really seem to take pride in their museum. Best of all it's free! They're also not in your face about donating, just a little clear box at the end of the museum. There's plenty to see outside as well with little traffic and beautiful architecture all around. The views of the bay are so beautiful. If you want a nice quiet day with the family with a bit of history mixed in, this museum is great.

I was here in the 1950s as a military dependent and spent a number of happy Sunday evenings at the buffet of the Fort Monroe Club inside the casemate. I was pleased to see what a wonderful job of preservation they have done with the place. Thanks.
