Oriental Institute Museum

The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is a leading research center for the ancient Middle East. The museum houses some 350,000 artifacts—around 5,000 of which are on display—excavated mainly by OI archaeologists. Founded in 1919, at a time when the Middle East was called the Orient, the OI has pioneered innovative excavations and comprehensive dictionary projects that chronicle ancient civilizations. The Oriental Institute Museum aims to understand, reveal, and protect ancient Middle Eastern civilizations.

An excellent little museum...I avoid Chicago like the plague, but if you're going to spend some time there anyway, make SURE you hit this place up if you have any interest in ancient history. Awesome spot!

It is an overall nice museum but the tour could've been better. We were greeted at the door by a nice hospitable man at the front desk and proceded into the theatre for a short movie. Upon leaving the theatre we met our tour guide. The tour guide is the reason for the low rating i have given. He smelt as if he had smoked a pack of cigarettes before the tour, was poorly dressed, and seemed as if he didnt want to be there in the first place. I would return to the museum again for a self guided tour before i take another guided tour.

My favorite museum in Chicago. Offers many unique historical artifacts ranging from ancient Egypt to late 20th century Islamic dynasty's. They offer tour guides as well.
