Fountain Paint Pot Nature Trail

The Fountain Paint Pot is a mud pot located in Lower Geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park.

The Fountain Paint Pot is named for the reds, yellows and browns of the mud in this area. The differing colors are derived from oxidation states of the iron in the mud.As with all hot springs, the heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground, which is expelled here. Also, rising gasses cause the bubbling action. The bubble action in the mud varies with the seasons. In the early summer, the mud is watery from the high water tabledue to rain and snow melt. By the end of summer, the mud is much thicker as the water table drops.

It was beautiful and I am so happy I put this on my list. There needs to be a little more parking. Had to park on the road. Also I have a service dog and one of the tour guide was super rude about me needing my dog. So probably not animal friendly.

One part of a million at Yellowstone that everyone should see. Very very crowded with foreign travelers that did not understand english. Very clean and well maintained by the National Park Service.

Assortment of things here. Mud pots, painted pots, geysers and hot springs. Bison can be nearby also. Beware they are not docile.
