Great atmosphere for tourists, there are often street performers, tasty quick grab food options, and lots of novelty stores. The area has a lot of history - and the mixture ensures there is something for everyone. Yes this area is a tourist trap, and it doesn't give a good feel of the 'true Boston' - but who cares - tourists keep coming back here for a reason and most leave happy with the experience. Parking in the area is limited, I prefer to park on the outskirts of Boston and take the T in. It is a short walk from here to other historic and shopping destinations.
