Highclere Castle

Designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, this is considered to be one of the finest Victorian homes still in existence, which houses fine furniture and works of art. Today, the Castle is the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is known around the world as the real home of 'Downton Abbey'.

We from St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston were enchanted to be able to visit Highclere Castle! We were treated to a remarkable presentation which included details about the architecture, art, furnishings and life in the castle., as well as the rich history of the family. As many of us are avid fans of Downton Abbey, our knowledgeable docent included many details of just how the beautiful rooms were included in this marvelous series. Most special in our tour was a surprise appearance by Lady Fiona who visited with us and answered questions about the castle and grounds. What a memorable day!
